ну так себе; если честно, к концу так действовали на нервы, что я выключила 
под настроение...но мне нравится , что сразу же слышно "почерк" тобина, хотя и остается что-то от оригинала |

On his previous release, Tobin gave us a schizophrenic album, filled with jazz fusion, turntablism, heavy bass, and unrecognizable genre bending that put DJ Shadow and the rest of the NinjaTunes label to shame. How in the hell can anyone, lest a simple man, improve upon that?
By following the same didactic Boards Of Canada did: using the same basic aspects of the previous release and tweaking them to a darker, heavier, and more dissonant sound. The result? A completely different album that sounds similar but not boring. Same artist, same style, irrevocably different. What did John Peel say about the Fall again?
The opener gives us an idea of what this shindigs gonna be about with "Like Regular Chickens" (even the track titles are a little stranger). It carries a dark atmosphere of cymbal crashes and ambience, with a fluctuating beat smoldering just beneath the surface. I feel a sense of ambivalence and ambiguity. But I like my music like I like my women: angry and unfamiliar.
My only complaint is that it can feel a little less experimental, and less jazzy. While Bricolage dazzled with its cornucopia of sounds all over the place, Permutation sticks mainly to the drum and bass/turntablism formula. Not that this is bad; as I've stated before, ...Endtroducing happens to be one of my favorite albums.
The feelings of fear culminate on "Escape", a fast paced jazz heavy piece. Five different beats coincide with far East instruments and the occasional screeching jazz beat. Yes, it is frightening. Yes, it is hectoring. And yes, it is eargasmic.
But don't take that too seriously. This still sounds like Aphex Twin and cLOUDDEAD took 'shrooms together. The eclecticism of genres is still prevalent in the work. And most importantly, the music is still interesting and different from 99% of the shit I hear. I think I'll stay with this guy. |
